The Matthew Prototype Model Test

Workshops are planned at M Shed Museum using tours of the harbourside on the replica of The Matthew and making and sailing activities at the Museum. Warwick Moreton one of the shipwrights who built the replica of The Matthew tested a design for a cardboard version.

Squared rigged, the boat makes good use of following wind. Its course being adjustable with a flexible rudder.


Warwick wants to hear from schools that want to test the building process and the learning resources that accompanying this workshop.


The learning resources for this practical boat building workshop cover Tudor explorers and navigation. Making links between ancient and modern ways of navigating and raising questions about future navigators and deep space explorers of the future.
